Our Curriculum:

   Our teachers combine their knowledge and expertise from the fields of early childhood and special education. We plan interdisciplinary, thematic curricula supportive of the needs and gifts of all students. Activities are developmentally appropriate and are designed to serve instructional goals as guided by the Salem district and Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks. The learning environment is enhanced to provide meaningful experiences, challenge the children's abilities and respond to their growing interests. In a climate of caring and respect, students interact with ideas, materials, teachers, and one another.

   We believe that play is the very essence of childhood. Play nurtures the child's development in social, emotional, physical, and intellectual areas. There is a balance of unstructured time for child- initiated activities and structured time for teacher-directed activities.

We support literacy development by:

   * Providing an environment that encourages children to use language as often as possible to express feelings, describe experiences, make predictions, and discuss past events.
   * Reading to children and with children.
   * Offering opportunities for literacy related play associated with authentic everyday experiences
   * Establishing a print-rich environment.
   * Building children's fascination with words through songs, finger plays, games, poems, and stories.
   * Developing an awareness of alphabet and letter sounds through alphabet songs, name recognition, and rhymes.
